Did You
Know?
- The process used to make bST is the basic process used to produce
several products other than bST, such as human insulin, interferons,
and human and animal somatotropins.
- bST, like other milk proteins, is digested into amino acids
when eaten. It is not orally active as it cannot be absorbed from
the stomach as an intact molecule. bST is a protein that occurs
naturally in milk. Giving cows POSILAC®
does not cause the level of bST already present in milk to change.
- bST does not stimulate growth in humans. It affects cows and
certain other animals, thus being species-limited. This was demonstrated
during the 1950s when researchers at Harvard University and other
schools injected people with substantial amounts of bST as a possible
cure for dwarfism. bST was shown not to cause people to grow or
to otherwise affect their well-being. Scientists later learned
only somatotropin from humans or other primates will stimulate
growth in humans.
- The human safety of dairy and meat products from dairy cows
receiving bovine somatotropin (rbST) supplements has been confirmed
by over 50 countries over 50 countries. POSILAC has also been
evaluated on dairy farms in many countries worldwide.
- All producers, regardless of herd size, can use POSILAC to increase
the profitability of their herd as lactation progresses. Milk
production can increase from 5 to 15 lbs per cow per day.
- The reproductive performance of cows supplemented with POSILAC
is equal to that of unsupplemented cows of an equivalent production
level.
