We've kept cows
in our herd making money that would have been sold without POSlLAC,"
says Hal Arant of Bowman, South Carolina. "We put all cows on around
63 days in milk."
The rolling
herd average is 21,640 pounds of milk for this 250 cow Holstein
herd. Average summer production runs 55 pounds per cow per day.
Cows are milked in a herringbone parlor and housed half in free
stalls and the other half in loose housing.
Other special
feeding considerations used during heat to maintain dry matter intake
include feeding a lot at night when temperatures are lower. Hal
also tries to increase the number of feedings and provide fresh
TMR.
The use of
fans, shades and sprinklers also helps keep cooler and helps maintain
DMI. Fans and sprinklers are used in the feeding area and shades
in the corral. Fans also provide cooling in the holding area, return
alley, free stalls and herringbone parlor.
