"POSlLAC has
helped me to keep good cows in the herd longer," says Melvin Brown,
Jr., of Milltown, Kentucky. "I can now keep them producing while
waiting for problem breeders to freshen again." He estimates the
response to POSlLAC in the summer months to be profitable.
Rolling herd
average for this 100 cow Holstein herd is 18,000 pounds of milk.
Average production during the summer months is 60 pounds per cow
per day. Cows are milked in a double five herringbone and housed
in free stalls.
Melvin feels
that the cooler the cows are during the summer, the more they will
eat. It is important to keep cows comfortable to increase dry matter
intake. He accomplishes this by using fans and sprinklers in the
free stalls and feeding area. Cows are fed a total mixed ration.
