"The use of
POSILAC has enabled us to maintain five to 10 pounds more milk per
cow than without ," says Scott Price of Sulphur Springs, Texas.
His 250 cow herd averages 50 to 55 pounds of milk per cow per day
during the summer and has a rolling herd average of 18,000 pounds.
Milking takes place in a herringbone parlor.
In addition
to the benefits of POSILAC®, it is also important
to use shade, fans and sprinklers to keep cows comfortable during
the heat of the summer. Scott uses all three in the holding area
and return alley. A shade cloth also aids in cooling while cows
are out to pasture. Otherwise, cows are kept cool the old fashioned
way, with trees and breeze!
Cows are fed
grain in the parlor and a TMR outside. During the heat of the summer,
Scott also uses a higher energy ration to help maintain dry matter
intake. He knows that reducing heat stress increases DMI.
